Revival Meetings with Guy Thomas

A Call to Revival by the Pastor.

We are living in unusual days concerning the work of the local church. With hundreds of churches closing constantly and empty buildings doting the countryside and in the face of apathetic membership, the tendency is to give in to the spiral. One common response is to have less meetings and less activity and shift into maintenance mode, so we can keep the lights on and the doors open.  Many churches have abandoned many good traditions to a more worldly flavor and to make things more entertaining to attract a new generation. These kinds of reactions are totally opposite of what the Bible teaches about the work of the local church. Jesus said,” And If I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me”.

Some Things that work in Revival Preparation.

A pastor once told Billy Sunday, “I don’t have revivals, because they don’t last”, to which Billy replied, “neither do bath’s, but we still need to take one once in a while”.

Pastors are the key to revival in the local church. The church will be passionate about what the pastor is passionate about. The church will be excited about what the pastor is excited about.

You are the main cheer leader for Revival. Take a few weeks before the revival to emphasize the revival in your preaching.

Here are some things that have worked well for me as I’ve tried to lead churches to pray for revival.

      • COTTAGE PRAYER MEETINGS.

Select key leaders to enlist them to have prayer meeting in their homes a few weeks before the revival. Encourage them to invite their church friends and Sunday School class.

      • 24-HOUR PRAYER WATCH.

Make a poster and encourage people to take an hour to pray for revival and the lost. Set up a room at the church or just have them pray at home.

      • PRAY FOR THE LOST BY NAME.

This is a very unique and helpful tool to get people to praying for the Lost by name. Put a small black board at the altar with the PRAYING FOR THE LOST BY NAME on it. Then ask people to fille out the forms with the same 3 names. One half in the basket and the other in their bible. Southside at Fulton did this all last year. They baptized 28 over the year and 14 of them were people who’s names were in the basket. This keeps prayer before the people.

  • DAY OF PRAYER AND FASTING.

  • PRAYER 30 MINUTES BEFORE SERVICES EACH NIGHT.

  • Billy Graham said the three greatest ingredients of a an effective evangelistic meeting is prayer, prayer and prayer!
    • Ideas for Publicity

      • Bulletin inserts –put inserts publicizing dates, times, events, name and picture of the evangelist several weeks in advance.
      • Church Sign – If you have a street sign publicize the meeting on the sign several weeks in advance.
      • Church website – put the meeting on the front page of your website so it is the first thing people see when they view your site.
      • Utilize all forms of social media such as face book, twitter, etc.
      • Newspaper articles – need to be submitted to the newspaper well in advance. Most papers have a “free church section”, but you are limited to what you can submit. In a paid article you can utilize a photo and more detail. You can also ask a reporter to come and interview the evangelist. Remember, exposure is the key!
      • Print of 4×3 cards with all the information about the revival and your church. Have several hundreds of these because they are very easy for the members to distribute wherever they go. The church members are more likely to personally invite someone if they have something to give them.
      • Billboards, radio and television. Some businesses will help you out on the expense if they know their gift is tax deductible.
      • Posters & Flyers – put them in the foyer of your church. In every classroom and assign people in the church to distribute them in various places throughout the town. Grocery stores, service stations, business offices, schools, etc.
      • Door to Door flyer distribution and visitation – have hundreds of flyers printed up that look neat and professional and ask members to distribute them door to door in their neighborhoods, inviting neighbors and people in their immediate area to the revival.
      • Mail letters to every pastor and church in your town or association inviting them to participate. Follow up with a phone call. The pastor can assign a committee in the church to make the phone calls.
      • Radio interview with the pastor and evangelist on a local radio station.
      • Announcements from the pulpit every Sunday for several weeks in advance by the pastor.

Getting people to the Revival is key to lost people being saved. Special night emphasis which help members to get their lost friends and family to services is helpful.

      • Friend Day – Specify a certain night and encourage your people to invite a friend. Especially the lost friends you have been praying for.
      • Operation Andrew – The Billy Graham organization has used this material for years in their crusades. It involves the church members writing down the names of five people (similar to friend day), that they will commit to pray for, cultivate, invite or bring to the revival. You can order the materials from the “ Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.”
      • Each One, Reach One – ( this is an alternative to friend day) the emphasis is on each member personally praying for, cultivating, inviting and brining at least one lost person with them to the designated service. There is a card you can use or you can develop your own “Each One, Reach One” card, with the name of the prospect and the name of the church member and you can take these cards and tack them to a cross or bulletin board, somewhere visible near the altar. The pastor and staff must take the lead and set the example by bringing their cards.
      • Special Emphasis Nights ( suggested format)

      Sunday Evening – “Men’s Night.”

      Monday Evening – “Ladies’ Night”

      Tuesday Evening – “Children’s Night”

      Wednesday Evening – “Youth/Student Night”

      • Pre-Service Emphasis

Have a dinner before the services every night and have the evangelist speak to each group for the purpose of giving a brief and simple gospel presentation.

Men’s Night – Bar-B-Q or Fish Fry, Chili, etc.

Ladies’ Night – Soup, sandwiches, salads, etc.

Children’s Night – “Hotdog Hog-out” with hot dogs and chips.

Student Night – “Pizza Pig-out” with pizza and chips.

Note: for the children’s and students nights you can print tickets for them to hand out at school to invite their fiends.

You may vary the emphasis to fit your church and schedule, but I would suggest that the pre-service emphasis be at 5:45 each night, with all the evening services starting at 7:00 P.M.

      • Youth night: Special pizza party before church will enable the youth to invite their friends.
      • Pack the Pew Night: Pack the Pew Night is still, every effective if you assign pew captains from the leadership of every department of the church and have them enlist members to sit in their designated pews, and to invite and bring lost people to sit with them. The idea is to fill up the pews with church members and lost friends, neighbors and family members.
      • Invite the High School Football or Basket Ball Team: Have a special night for them, I would suggest you do it along with Youth/student night .
      • Visitation & Outreach : This still works no matter the size or location of your church!
      • Pastors Letter to all Church Members: Mail out the first letter to every family in your church stressing the importance of the revival as well as their attendance and involvement. Mail the first letter (6-8) weeks in advance. Mail a second letter or a card as a reminder the week prior to the revival beginning. You must constantly keep reminding people of the importance of the revival!
      • Fellowship every night after services. Most families are rushed to get to the services, so they have not eaten. Have your kitchen committee organize for sandwiches, soups chips, dips, relish trays, cheese, fruits and meats. Three things constitute spiritual growth Prayer, Bible and Fellowship. Prayer and Bible study you can do on your own but you can’t fellowship by yourself. These fellowships can be a great time to draw your people together.
      • VERY, VERY, VERY IMPORTANT…. Pastor, please make sure your people understand the greatest need that we have for an evangelistic revival meeting next to prayer is for church members to invite and bring lost people to the services!

      MUSIC

It’s been said that music sets the table for the preaching of God’s Word. There is no doubt the good tasteful Gospel Music can be used by the Holy Spirit to draw people to Christ.

      • Keep the music lively and mix good ole hymns with brisk choruses.
      • A couple of specials each night will be a blessing to all. One of the singers could be a guest from another church. Be careful, because people will only give you so much time. Try to hold the music to 30 minutes and I’ll do the same. We want people leaving wanting more not saying, “that lasted a way to long”. Music leader is key here. Not to use to much time with transitioning.
      • Make sure the service is planned out in advance and the musicians are prepared.
      • Use familiar invitation songs that most are familiar with.
      • The use of personal testimonies of salvation can be a blessing if kept brief.
      • Utilize Choir, soloists, quartets and instrumentals.

      INVITATION

      • Have several councilors at the ready to help the pastor if needed. Men with men and women with women and children.
      • Train them in advance with the Roman Road and make sure they know when to come to assist.

      IMPORTANCE OF PLANNING AND BALANCE.

People will only give you so much time, so we must be respectful when planning. Better to get out early, then to stay so long no one comes back. The Holy Spirit helps us in all aspects of planning.

       Revival Policy:

I am committed to go to any size church.

God’s work is accomplished through tithes and offerings. The church should take a love offering each service. Traveling, lodging meals and other expenses should be paid separately from the love offering. If the offering is split between music and preaching, it should be determined and agreed to beforehand. We have an RV that we can stay in if weather permits. It requires a 30-amp plug and water hook up. I can go about three days on sewage dump.
